GROVE PLACE ASSOCIATION                                             February 24, 2002    4:00 PM

General Meeting                                                                        Strong Museum

1.                  Vice President, Paul Pineo, welcomed the group of about 20 people in Pres. Sue Bovay’s absence, and thanked the Strong Museum for hosting the day’s meeting.

2.                  No minutes were read, nor was there an official Treasurer’s report.  However the balance in the treasury was reported to be about $7800.

3.                    Paul updated the group regarding the recent meeting of Roz Goldman’s GPA Art Committee. Work on a memorial plaque for the McQuays is proceeding.  Additionally, the committee decided to pursue funding to finance a visual upgrade of the East End Garage façade, and to secure the work of a Rochester sculptor for the courtyard of the Eastman Place Building where an Albert Paley piece once stood.

4.                    In Membership Chair, Mary Lou Schwartzberg’s absence, Paul reported that she has copies of the GPA membership list and email list available to members wanting them.

5.                    The Nominating Committee consisting of Sue Bovay, Myra Buonocore, Bob Keck, Diane Moonan, Paul Pineo, Stan Schwartzberg and Kim Russell have chosen the following slate of officers to be considered for the 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 fiscal years:

President:                                      Paul Pineo

First Vice President:                 Sandy Shapiro

Second Vice President:             Diane Moonan

Treasurer:                                      Elta Green

Secretary:              Judy Gregory (winters), Kathleen Lynch (summers)

Additionally, the following individuals will be asked to serve as committee chairs:

Beautification:              Myra Buonocore & Kathy Parse

                        Development:              John Lovenheim

                        Historical:                     Myra Buonocore

                        Membership:                Mary Lou Schwartzberg

                        Public Safety:              John Goldman

6.                  John Lovenheim updated the group on Sector V activities.  The City’s Zoning Revision Project is being presented to the public at several open houses during the month of February.  Though these plans have yet to be seen, the response from interested parties to zoning changes that would focus on Style and Design rather than Use, have been positive.

John also announced that RFPs were going out from the City to developers for the construction of owner-occupied townhouses on Charlotte St.  He also reported that the Downstairs Cabaret has been given a building on Main St. to use as an additional theater space.

7.                  Architects Craig Jensen and Ann Chantreuil updated the group on the Gibbs/Grove Sts. housing project.  A builder has been found and realtor Marge Burgeson will list and show the properties.  Canandaigua National Bank has agreed to a lending program and Joan Casey has agreed to extend their joint venture agreement.  Paul Pineo will be drawing up purchase contracts and the sale of five of the nine units will need to be guaranteed for the project to commence.

8.                  Officer Graham Hyland reported there were no crimes listed for the neighborhood over the past month.

9.                  An announcement calendar was handed out and Paul called attention to several items of interest to the group including the Mayor’s State of the City Address on March 4th, Roz Goldman’s upcoming talk at the Library on public art, and Judy Gregory’s exhibition at the University of Rochester.  He also suggested Brian Curran’s study on the demolition of vacant and foreclosed houses and how this affects property values and crime in the City, as interesting reading material.

10.              The next GPA meeting will be on March 24th, when City Forester, Ian Nadar, will speak about the division’s goals for protecting and enlarging the City’s urban forest, and will give the audience tips on tree care and maintenance of neighborhood street trees.

11.              The business portion of the meeting was adjourned and Director Rollie Adams of the Strong Museum was introduced.  His presentation updated the group on the success that’s lead the Museum into a $27 million expansion plan which will double its physical size by the year 2005, as well as doubling its current 300,000 attendees per year to a 600,000 figure.  Adams sees the Museum’s mission as being broader than simply that of a children’s museum as it reaches out to visitors from all over Western New York.

Before Adam’s presentation, a check for $500 from GPA was presented to the Museum in honor of GPA resident and Strong Museum architect, Bob Macon.  Colleen Brady, Director of Development at the Museum, was given a gift of Gloria Weyert’s cards in appreciation of her efforts at putting the day’s meeting together.

The meeting was adjourned and attendees were invited to a reception hosted by the Strong Museum.

Respectfully submitted (with notes from Paul Pineo),

Judy Gregory, Secretary
