Executive Committee Meeting Myra
Buonocore’s
Present: Elta Green, Sue Bovay, John Lovenheim, Stan
Schwartzberg, Miriam Shapiro, Paul Pineo, Myra Buonocore, Judy Gregory
1.
President
Sue Bovay reviewed plans for upcoming General Meetings. GPA’s Annual Meeting will be held on April
28th, at which time officers will be elected. (Members who paid dues for 2001-2002 and
those pre-paying for 2002-2003 are eligible to vote.) Letters will be sent to
all members listing the slate of candidates and committees to serve on, as well
as requesting dues payments. Also
included will be notices of neighborhood clean-up dates of May 4th
and 18th, and an announcement of an April 23rd public preview of the
City’s new zoning plans. Additionally, there will be a presentation of
information regarding those zoning plans at the Annual Meeting.
Judy Gregory will get in touch with RoCo, the area’s
newest contemporary art gallery, about holding our May 19th meeting
in their new space.
Suggestions for future meetings included
presentations by Roderic Cox Cooper (new NET Director), as well as from
representatives of the Corn Hill Landing project, Garth Fagan Dance
Studio/Performing Arts Center project, Rochester School Board, the Fast Ferry
project, the Midtown project, and the Urban Design Center project. Also suggested was a tour of Mount Hope
Cemetery.
2.
The
group felt it was time to do a walk-through of the neighborhood with Mike
Powell from the City’s NET office to alert him to this area’s needs. It was suggested that we get refrigerator
magnets displaying the City’s helpline phone number to distribute to all
members to use when they have questions regarding trash, clean-ups, etc.
3.
Soon-to-be-GPA-President
Paul Pineo recently attended a Neighborhood Presidents Meeting sponsored by the
City. Police Chief Duffy discussed the
drug problems that have become major crime indicators in the City. Along these lines, Sue felt that GPA should
approach the owners of the buildings on the NW corner of Scio and University
Ave. with our concerns that these buildings seem to be becoming frequent sites
of drug-related activities.
4.
It
was decided to memorialize Bob Macon with a $500 contribution from GPA to the
Eastman School of Music that would match the $500 donation presented to the
Strong Museum in his honor before his death.
5.
John
Lovenheim reported that Sector V is planning to subsidize several projects for
which the City will be supplying matching funds. One project would be the courtyard where the new Gibbs/Grove
housing is to be constructed. The group
felt it would be appropriate to name the courtyard for architect and neighbor
Bob Macon, suggesting “Macon Way”.
Subsidies will also go to the Corn Hill columns project and the YMCA
Teen Center.
Sector V will also be examining the City’s new
zoning plans, particularly as they apply to areas within the Inner Loop. It is felt that the concept of “style” over
“use” is appropriate, but how this concept will be applied is still
questionable.
6.
Myra
Buonocore gave an update of the Beautification Committee’s activities. The Committee consists of Myra, Barbara
Wager, Kathy Parse, Nancy Macon and Mary Lou Schwartzberg. They would like to purchase six additional
street planters plus a special soil with which to fill them, at a cost of about
$600. The group felt this would be an
appropriate long-term expense and voted to set the committee’s budget at $1000
to include perennials for spring planting.
Myra also announced that bagels and coffee will be provided in her
driveway for spring clean-up days, and that the people who have signed up for
the task will be assigned particular jobs and assistants from those who show up
to work.
7.
Miriam
Shapiro will act as one of the guides for the Landmark society’s Coffee Tour of
Grove Place on Saturday, June 22nd.
Since this event has drawn large crowds in the past, it is felt that one
more guide will be needed. Realtor
Marge Burgeson will be asked to have information on hand for participants
regarding the Gibbs/Grove housing development.
8.
Paul
reported that there is a Lot Reservation system being used for the Gibbs/Grove
housing development, and that everything is in place for moving forward with
the project except getting the NY State Attorney General’s approval for the
contracts. It is hoped that the
contracts will be ready by June.
9.
Officer
Laurie Fyles will be retiring from the Police Department and GPA will recognize
her support for the neighborhood at the Annual Meeting. A packet of Gloria Weyerts’ photos will be
presented to Laurie as a gift.
10.
It
was agreed that GPA should renew its $100 membership in the Common Good
Planning Center.
11.
Sue
announced that Bob Keck has linked GPA’s website to that of Artwalk.
12.
Myra
agreed to continue hosting Executive Committee Meetings for the near future.
The
meeting was adjourned at 9:55 AM.
Respectfully
submitted,
Judy
Gregory, Secretary
