Grove Place Association

Executive Committee Meeting

July 9, 2002, 8:00 AM

10-2 Selden Street

Present: Paul Pineo, Elta Green, Kathy Parse and Sue Bovay

1.            President Paul Pineo reviewed the minutes of the June 11 Executive Committee meeting; minutes were approved as amended.

2.   Elta Green, Treasurer, reported a discrepancy between the bank statement and her records. She and Sue will review records and make corrections as needed.

3.            Beautification. Kathy reported that she and Myra met with Ian Nadar, City Forester, to relay to him needs for services for street trees, e.g. pruning. The City has planted two new trees one on Gibbs and the other on Grove. Watering them is critical to their survival; the City will provide “watering bags” which can be used as needed. An “Adopt a Tree” project may help get neighbors involved. Myra and Kathy are developing a Beautification plan to submit to the Executive Committee and the membership this fall. Major issues are the cost of paying a professional to maintain public plantings during the summer, and how such costs are to be met. Paul thanked Kathy for the work she and Myra have done and pointed out that their efforts have motivated others to improve public spaces.

4.   Fall meetings.

September 8 - Picnic

September 22 - General Meeting with Larry Stid, Director of Planning (City) speaking about the City’s Master Plan at the Y.

October 27 - (Tentative) Meeting at the Downstairs Cabaret Theatre’s new building on East Main Street.

November 24 - (Tentative) Roderic Cox-Cooper, NET administrator, reporting on services the NET offices provide, with a focus on Area C.

December 8 - (Tentative) Gathering at the Eastman Living Center.

Paul will reserve the meeting space at the Y as needed.

5.   Walk-Around with the NET Office (Area C), July 19, 10:00 AM. Jim Bovay, Paul, and Mike Powell, Conservation Officer, will identify conditions within the neighborhood that do not meet code, and seek from Mike information on what steps need to be taken (and by whom) to remediate them.

Chris Kawolsky has asked whether Grove Place would bear a part of the cost of closing the parking lot on East Main (between Scio and Carpenter Alley) each night there is a show at the Downstairs Cabaret Theatre. Chris would close the lot to just theatre patrons if we agree to do so; the Cabaret would police the area. Chris wants to put a bar in the new building at 540 East Main. Consensus was that there needs to be more discussion of the pros and cons before we can reach a decision.

6.   Phil Anderson has offered to assist in the development of promotional brochures for Grove Place. Some ideas are: a new design for the picnic flyer, a brochure that promotes downtown living. Sue will ask Miriam to join her at a meeting with Phil to brainstorm. Paul will provide Renaissance 2010 literature and other information to provide some background for Phil.

7.   History. Paul will ask Lin Garrenton if he would be willing to take responsibility for organizing Grove Place archival material and preparing it for deposit at the Historical Society.

8.            Miscellaneous.

Membership and real taxes paid. What should be included? Consensus was property within Grove Place Association’s boundaries. Paul is working on this. Neighborhood Lighting. We should continue to push this project as recommended by the committee in concert with the NET Rochester Police.

Rochester Rail Transit Committee. Grove Place pays the $15 annual dues. Sue will ask Miriam if she would agree to be our representative. If she agrees, Grove Place will continue to pay; if not, we will drop the membership.

Gloria Marie Weyerts provides photos of neighborhood events (e.g. picnic) What should their disposition be? Liquor License applications. Paul receives notices and will keep us appraised of any that may be of concern to our neighborhood.

The meeting adjourned at 8:40.

Respectfully submitted,

Sue Bovay
