Our
guest speaker was The Honorable Stephen Lindley. He was appointed to City Court
by Mayor Johnson about one year ago and was elected in November. Judge Lindley
explained the court system and where city court fits in. There are nine
judgeships in City Court. One is in Drug Court and one handles Domestic
Violence. The judges handled 49,000 cases in 2002. The Monroe County jail has
1,400-1,500 beds. The average daily count is 1350. If this number is close to
1,500 the state will shut down the jail. The new jail has 430 beds and the jail
by MCC has 200. Space limitations influence who can be held and who has to be
let go. The Monroe County Jail receives prisoner from the suburbs and from
Rochester. Judge Lindley answered questions after his talk.
